Free Summer Crochet Patterns to get the Season Started Right! Part 2: Beach Bags

For the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing collections of free summer crochet patterns to help you prepare for the beginning of summer.

This week the collection is for crochet beach bags. Crochet lends itself really well to beach bags because it creates a light, durable and flexible bag (it’s amazing how much stuff you can get into these!). But you have to use the right sort of yarn. I’ve done some googling, and here are some tips from people in the know across the internet:

  • Cotton yarn is the most popular for a beach bag. It wears well and can be thrown into the wash if your bag gets a bit dirty. The colours will fade, but that’s part of the charm!
  • A linen blend is also very strong and light, so would be another good choice. Linen blend yarns do tend to be a bit pricey though!
  • Acrylic tends to be too stretchy for a bag – but of course it depends on the yarn! If you do go for acrylic, try pulling and stretching it a bit. If it breaks it’s obviously a no-go, and if it stretches out a lot, try going for something else.
  • Twine, hemp and nylon cord seem to be good suggestions for sturdy fibres as well, but I’m not sure how comfortable they would be on your shoulder.
  • Personally, I like the idea of using a market bag as a beach bag. It would mean sand wouldn’t gather at the bottom of your bag and you can pack a lot of stuff into it!

I hope these tips are helpful, and enjoy these lovely free patterns I have found for summer crochet beach bags!

#1 Ratsche-Beach-Bag – Ratschebutsch

This beach bag just screams summer. And the best part about it? It’s super colourful but there are no ends to weave in at the end of the project! Sonja from Ratschebutsch has turned all the loose ends into a really cute little fringe. This bag is definitely on my to-do list, and I think it’s going to be a huge summer hit!

Ok sure, maybe this isn’t the type of hold-all beach bag you thought would be on this post, BUT exceptions can be made for awesomeness, can’t they? This lovely bag from Jess at the Make & Do Crew is one of my favourites! It’s adorable and would look perfect with any summer outfit.

This cutie is one of the more complicated patterns on this list. For this bag, you need to know how to sew and have a sewing machine at hand. But if you’re willing to go through the effort, you would be rewarded with a gorgeous bag at the end of it!

This beautiful filet crochet pattern would be perfect for a beach bag. The detail in it is lovely, and it uses sport-weight yarn which means it would be nice and light to carry. Apparently Caroline can fit a queen sized blanket in it with room to spare! So this is definitely big enough to carry all your beach necessities.

I know, I know, this is another market bag. But I really do think market bags make wonderful beach bags too! I love the colours Mylène has chosen for this bag. The bright fuchsia really says summer to me.

If you are someone who can pack light when going to the beach (or have a significant other you can offload all your stuff on 😀 ), this bright summery clutch could be perfect. Or, you can also modify the pattern to make it as big as you want by adding more rounds. Either way, I think this is a super cute clutch.

I realise that some people prefer backpacks to shoulder bags. So I thought I had better update this post with one of those as well. This super cute unisex pattern would be very convenient for trips to the beach.
